warehouse lock by Lockset

A warehouse holds the one thing a business cannot easily replace in a hurry, its stock. Yet the lock on a godown shutter is often the cheapest lock in the whole operation, bought years ago by whoever was in charge that day. If that sounds familiar, this piece is worth five minutes.

Warehouse security is a bigger subject than locks, but locks are the part you can fix this week, and doing it well makes every other measure more effective.

Map every entry, not just the main shutter

Walk the building and list every way in. The main shutter, the side door, the loading bay, the small office door, the back door nobody uses, the window grills, the roof access. Thieves are not interested in your front entrance if a side door has a five-year-old padlock rusting on a thin hasp.

Each of these points needs a lock matched to its job. A loading shutter that opens twenty times a day needs something tough but quick. A back door that is opened twice a month can carry a heavier, slower setup.

Heavy duty padlocks and disk locks

For shutters and hasps, a heavy duty padlock with a short, hardened shackle, or a disk lock with its shackle mostly hidden, is the usual choice. Both resist bolt cutters well. A stainless steel body matters in a warehouse because many godowns are damp, dusty or both, and a rusted lock either jams or gets forced.

On wide shutters, lock both ends. A single lock in the middle lets the corners be lifted, which is sometimes enough room to slide goods out.

Key control is half the job

In many warehouses the bigger risk is not a thief from outside. It is a key that has been copied, lent or lost. Decide who holds which keys and write it down. When a supervisor leaves, change the locks they had access to. It is cheaper than one missing pallet.

Keyed alike locks let one person open several doors with a single key, which suits a manager who opens up every morning. For larger sites, a master key arrangement lets each area have its own key while a senior person carries one that opens all. Ask your lock supplier which of these they can set up.

Make the lock hard to reach

A good lock on a weak hasp is a weak lock. Check that hasps and brackets are welded or bolted through, not held with a few short screws. Shrouded hasps, which wrap around the padlock and cover the shackle, add a lot of protection for little cost. And keep the area around the main shutter lit at night, since most people trying to force a lock prefer the dark.

Inspect on a schedule

Once a quarter, walk the building and try every lock. Look for stiff keys, rust at the shackle, loose brackets and signs of tampering such as scratches round the keyhole. Replace anything that feels wrong. A lock that fails while staff are trying to open up at 7 in the morning is a cost in itself, even if nothing is stolen.

Loading bays and the daytime risk

Many warehouse losses happen in daylight, not at night. During busy loading hours, doors stay open, vehicles come and go and nobody is quite sure who is supposed to be where. A side door left unlocked for convenience or a shutter half open during a lunch break can be all it takes.

Set a simple rule that any door not being actively used is locked, even during working hours. Fit locks that are quick to open and close, so staff are not tempted to leave them open to save time. A heavy duty padlock or disk lock that closes with a simple push is easier to keep in daily use than one that needs a key to lock.

Assign responsibility for each door to a named person on each shift. When someone knows a specific shutter is theirs to check, it gets checked. When it belongs to everyone, it belongs to no one. A short closing checklist, signed at the end of each shift, takes two minutes and removes a lot of guesswork when stock goes missing.
